To qualify as a biodiversity hotspot, a region must meet following two strict criteria

#Unit 10. Ecological Principles
  1. Region has at least 1,500 vascular plants as endemics and must have 30% or less of its original natural vegetation
  2. Region has at least 1,500 mammal species as endemics and must have 30% or less of its original natural vegetation
  3. Region has at least 1,500 vascular plants as endemics and must have 50% of its original natural vegetation
  4. Region has at least some threatened plant species and must have 30% or less of its original natural vegetation
