#Unit 11. Evolution and Behavior

Just as muscles become strengthened by work, more strongly exercised organs attract and become enlarged by the “nervous fluid.”
Acquired during an individual’s lifetime, are inherited—a principle called inheritance of acquired characteristics.

#Unit 10. Ecological Principles

Animals use behavior to survive in cold temperatures
Curling up into a ball to reduce the exposed surface area.
Penguins may huddle together to conserve heat.
Bears hibernate, spending the winter in a deep sleep.

#Unit 6. System Physiology – Plant

According to the current hypothesis, the gradient in phototropin phosphorylation induces the movement of auxin to the shaded side of the coleoptile. Once the auxin reaches the shaded side of the tip, it is transported basipetally to the elongation zone, where it stimulates cell elongation. The acceleration of growth on the shaded side and the slowing of growth on the illuminated side (differential growth) give rise to the curvature toward light.

#Unit 13. Methods in Biology

Chromatography columns are considered to consist of a number of adjacent zones in each of which there is sufficient space for an analyte to completely equilibrate between the two phases, Each zone is called a theoretical plate (having no N).

#Unit 3. Fundamental Processes

FtsZ functions at an early stage of septum formation.
Early in the division cycle, FtsZ is localized throughout the cytoplasm, but prior to cell division FtsZ becomes localized in a ring around the circumference at the mid-cell position.
The structure is called the Z-ring.
