After brief examination of the evolution of the tetrapod limb, from fish fins to human hands, has hopefully illuminated the importance of Hox gene regulation during limb development. Hox genes are critical for:

#Unit 5. Developmental Biology
  1. Specifying fates along each axis of the limb, and their expression is under the influence of signals emanating from the flank (proximal) and AER (distal), among others.
  2. Specifying fates along proximal-distal axis of the limb, and their expression is under the influence of signals emanating from the flank (proximal) but not from AER (distal).
  3. Specifying fates along each axis of the limb, by maintaining the expression of retinoic acid distally.
  4. Specifying fates along proximal-distal axis of the limb, and their expression is under the influence of signals emanating from the AER (proximal).
